Fans of third-person shooters will find plenty of action in Unit 13 for the PlayStation Vita. Developed by Zipper Interactive and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, the game was released in early 2012. A demo version was made available for download off of the PlayStation Network, giving players a taste of the full PS Vita game. In Unit 13, you work with other operatives within the military elite to combat global terror networks. The game puts you right into the action. When you enter the game, you have the ability to choose from six different operatives, all of whom have their own unique skill sets and abilities. These include the Commando, the Technician, the Infiltrator, and the Marksman. With your chosen character, you must complete tactical missions and prove that you belong with the best of the best. The game consists of more than 30 missions spread out over several different environments. Each mission has its own set of objectives, which can be completed in any order but which may require you to meet certain conditions for success. Some missions allow a direct action approach, meaning you can complete the mission in any way you’d like while others force you to use specific methods to succeed. As you fight your way through each mission, you’ll get the chance to unlock high value targets, which will pitch you into battle against an especially tough opponent and force you to test your skills. Each mission in Unit 13 can be played cooperatively with other gamers, whether through the Vita’s built-in wireless or through 3G connectivity. You can instantly connect with an online network of other Unit 13 players and embark on a two-person co-op game, compete against other players, or compare your high scores against your friends. If you stay connected to the Unit 13 network, you’ll get the opportunity to download mission unlocks for more gameplay, try your hand at daily challenges, and compete for a global high score. Additionally, with every mission you complete, you can unlock the Dynamic mode, which changes your objectives and moves enemy locations to other points on the map, forcing you to approach the level from a different angle. Unit 13 makes use of several of the PS Vita’s features, including its dual analog sticks and the touch pads on the front and rear. The game allows players to have fluid control over their actions and gives traditional console games a more tactile feel. With less narrative bracketing each mission, the focus here is on the gameplay, which helps transform the portable gaming experience. Although developed for a handheld, which by its nature is different from playing on any other device, this game has been designed to feel like a console shooter that makes good use of the Vita’s touchscreen. Unit 13 for the PS Vita combines the gameplay of traditional console shooters with the accessibility of a handheld device and received high ratings for its success in that aspect. This game allows you to take the action with you wherever you go, providing you with a variety of missions to keep you entertained while on the go.
